What families say about Phoenix communities

Three days ago, my Mom became a resident. Although it is early days, my Mom's decision has been affirmed positively many times. Palazzo's staff are caring, happy, well-trained and eager to help. We received clear and comprehensive answers from management and staff throughout the planning and due diligence that we did before Mom signed-off on Palazzo. We were blown away by the delicious meals that we tried. We were greeted by friendly employees who took an interest in our needs and answered all of our questions. The newly renovated common areas of Palazzo are very well-designed and attractive. The residents of Palazzo, who we met in the Bistro or dining areas, expressed pride at calling it home. The move-in went smoothly. Mom's apartment was freshly painted and deep-cleaned. We were able to move in with all the furniture and accessories she needed. A surprise, complimentary A beautiful orchid and a hors-d'oeuvre plate arrived at her apartment on moving day. We were exhausted after a long day. What a nice touch!

Merrill Gardens is an elegant facility .... that is beautifully maintained and well-appointed with beautiful resident apartments / studios. Staff are friendly, caring, and compassionate. They make residents feel at home. Merrill Gardens is home to my mother, who lives in an apartment I frequently go to. The residents can enjoy wonderful dining either inside the "restaurant-like" dining room or outside on the patio overlooking the pool. My mother is safe and secure in this caring environment. Merrill Gardens is a great place to care for loved ones. Simply the best!

My mother-in law decided recently that she would like to return to Arizona. We researched senior communities that might be a suitable fit. Kevin Pugh and Wesley Wilkins were both very responsive and thorough in their follow-ups. They also provided excellent customer service. They went above and beyond to answer our questions and arrange video tours. Then they found the right apartment for her at an affordable price and provided the necessary care. We were also impressed by the number of employees in this community who are passionate about caring for the residents. This community is highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the criteria for Independent Living in Phoenix?

Arizona-licensed Independent Living communities serve seniors who need daily help with activities like bathing, dressing, medications, or meals but who don't require continuous skilled nursing. Phoenix communities complete a health and needs assessment before move-in to confirm they can provide the right level of care under state licensing rules.

Does Medicare pay for Independent Living?

No. Medicare doesn't cover room, board, or daily-living help in Independent Living communities. Phoenix residents can still use Medicare benefits for approved medical care they receive while living in a community — doctor visits, eligible therapies, and short-term hospital stays.

How much does Independent Living cost per month in Phoenix, AZ?

The median cost of independent living in Phoenix is $2,625 per month, about 58% below the Arizona median of $6,250 (2025 industry cost-of-care survey data). Actual rates depend on suite size and care level. A BoomersHub advisor can confirm current pricing at specific communities, free.

Does long-term care insurance cover Independent Living?

Most LTCI policies pay toward Independent Living once benefit triggers are met — typically needing help with two or more daily activities, or having a cognitive impairment. Check your policy's elimination period, daily benefit amount, and lifetime maximum before comparing Phoenix communities.

Are Independent Living expenses tax deductible?

The portion of Independent Living fees attributable to medical care may qualify as an itemized medical expense when a licensed practitioner has certified the resident as chronically ill and care follows a written plan. Keep itemized statements from your Phoenix community and confirm with a tax professional.

Do you bring your own furniture to Independent Living?

Usually, yes. Most Phoenix Independent Living communities encourage residents to furnish their suite with their own furniture, photos, and keepsakes so the new home feels familiar from day one. Ask each community what fits the floor plan and what's included.

How do I move a parent with dementia to Independent Living?

Start with their physician, then tour Phoenix communities that offer memory care or dementia-capable staffing. Keep routines and familiar belongings, plan the move for their best time of day, and coordinate the first weeks closely with staff. A local advisor can shortlist secure, well-suited Phoenix communities for free.

How does Independent Living work with Social Security?

Social Security income can be applied toward Independent Living, but on its own it rarely covers the full monthly cost. Most Phoenix families combine it with savings, long-term care insurance, VA benefits, or home equity to bridge the difference.

How do I choose the right Independent Living community in Phoenix?

Tour at least three, ideally around a mealtime, and revisit your favorite unannounced. Check the state license and last inspection date, ask about staffing ratios on nights and weekends, and understand how the community handles medical escalation. A BoomersHub advisor can build the shortlist for free.
