How to pay for nursing homes in Rhode Island

Most Rhode Island families combine two or three of these. An advisor walks through which apply to your situation.

  • Option 1

    Private pay

Many families pay for care with private funds: personal savings, pension payments, retirement accounts, or a combination of these and family contributions.

  • Option 2

    Selling your home

Selling a parent's home can help finance nursing homes, especially once the home is no longer occupied. Proceeds often fund several years of care.

  • Option 3

    Reverse mortgage

Homeowners aged 62+ can convert part of their home equity into cash while retaining ownership, with no loan payments due while living in the home. A spouse may remain in the home while proceeds help pay for a partner's care.

  • Option 4

    Long-term care insurance

LTC policies typically begin paying out when the policyholder needs help with two or more activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, or eating. Check the policy's elimination period and daily benefit before counting on it.

  • Option 5

    Veteran's programs

Veterans with at least 90 days of active duty (including one day during wartime) may qualify for VA benefits such as Aid & Attendance, which can add a monthly amount on top of a VA pension.

  • State program

Rhode Island Global Consumer Choice Waiver — Rhode Island Medicaid

Rhode Island Medicaid can help eligible lower-income seniors offset nursing homes costs through the Global Consumer Choice Waiver. The program does not pay room and board, and not every Rhode Island community participates — confirm before you tour.

What families say about Rhode Island

It is a beautiful location! According to my knowledge, this facility is privately owned. It is very different to other nursing homes. One glance will reveal that. My mom was there, and she said it felt like a five-star motel. It is clean and managed by professionals. I was also informed by her that the food was amazing! There are many options for meals throughout the day. I was actually jealous of her descriptions. She ate more than me for the day. This facility is dear to my mother. I have stayed at other places, but this place has made me happy ....., especially during Covid. Families are allowed to visit the facility many times per week. They are some of the most welcoming people I have ever seen. They understand how important it can be to spend time with loved ones. My mom is always there for me.It is a wonderful place to live ..... right on the Bay. This place is one of my favorite in the state.
